Madrid Airport

Duty-free is not one price. The same bottle, the same box, the same 100ml bottle of scent can cost noticeably more at one airport than another — and because you only ever stand in one of those shops, there is normally no way to know. We track the shelf price of the same product at every airport we cover, so the difference is visible before you fly rather than after.

Against Vienna, Berlin and Frankfurt, Madrid comes out cheaper on most products we can compare.

It runs the other way against Paris and Tokyo Haneda, where the same products are usually cheaper than here. Neither airport wins everything, which is the reason to check the individual product rather than trust a rule of thumb.

Two real examples against Paris, from the prices we hold today:

The gap tends to follow the border rather than the terminal: two airports in the same country, run by the same operator, usually price within a rounding error of each other, while crossing into another country — or to another operator — is where the difference shows up. For Madrid the widest gap is against Tokyo Haneda, which is the comparison worth making before you fly.
