Whisky Age Statements Explained: NAS, 12, 18 & 25 Years
What the number on a whisky bottle really means, why older costs more, and how to spot value when buying single malt duty-free.

The number on a whisky bottle — 12, 18, 25 — is one of the most misunderstood things in the spirits aisle. Here's exactly what it means, why older bottles cost so much more, and how to find value when buying single malt duty-free.
What the age statement actually means
An age statement is the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. A bottle labelled "12 Years" may contain spirit that's older, but legally nothing younger than 12 years. Maturation happens entirely in the cask — whisky does not continue ageing once bottled, so a 12-year-old bottled in 2010 is still a 12-year-old today.
NAS — No Age Statement
Many excellent whiskies carry no age statement at all. NAS bottles let distilleries blend casks of different ages for a target flavour without committing to a minimum. Don't dismiss them — some award-winning whiskies are NAS — but be aware you can't judge them by age alone.
Why older costs more
- The angel's share — roughly 2% of each cask evaporates per year. After 18 years, a meaningful share of the original spirit is simply gone.
- Time and storage — casks occupy warehouse space and capital for decades before any return.
- Scarcity — far less 25-year-old stock survives than 12-year-old, so price rises steeply with age.
Is older always better?
No. Age changes character — more oak, dried fruit and spice — but it isn't automatically "better". Many drinkers prefer the brighter, fruitier profile of a well-made 12-year-old. Pay for age because you want that flavour, not because a bigger number must mean better.
Finding value at duty-free
Duty-free is often where premium and aged bottles are most competitive — but prices for the exact same expression vary between airports. When you compare, make sure the age and size match exactly: a 12-year and an 18-year of the same brand are completely different products.
